Basic Stitches
- Knit stitch (k): inserting the needle into the stitch from front to back, wrapping the yarn around the needle, and pulling the needle back through the stitch
- Purl stitch (p): inserting the needle into the stitch from back to front, wrapping the yarn around the needle, and pulling the needle back through the stitch
- Cast on: creating the first row of stitches on the needle
- Bind off: finishing the last row of stitches and removing them from the needle
Techniques
- Stockinette stitch: alternating rows of knit and purl stitches to create a smooth, flat fabric
- Garter stitch: knitting every row to create a bumpy, textured fabric
- Ribbing: alternating knit and purl stitches in a pattern to create a stretchy, elastic fabric
- Cables: crossing stitches over each other to create a braided effect
- Lace: creating patterns of holes and eyelets in the fabric
- Intarsia: knitting with multiple colors to create a picture or design
- Fair Isle: knitting with multiple colors in a pattern to create a colorwork design
